San Francisco

arrived in san franciso via highway 101 and prior to that highway 1 and prior to that highway 101. interesting drive down from oregon. there are sections of highway 1 that remind me of the “old” steese highway north of fairbanks, only not as straight as the old steese highway….

some interesting observations re CA — first, CA idea of a “rough road” is significantly different than AK idea of a rough road. second, in AK they shoot road signs with shotguns and .44 magnums, in CA they shoot road signs with, paint balls. third, there is a very high % of toyota pickup trucks in the wine country and san franciso and there is a high % of toyota p/u trucks in fairbanks; therefore, the demographics and behaviors of the population of fairbanks, AK and san francisco, CA are nearly identical. (one difference to note, there does seem to be a much much higher number of mercedes benz, bmw and audi’s in SF vs. FAI; not sure why that would be….)

rather hilly here at times. i walked to chinatown the other day, climbed a steep hill, walked down the other side, then discovered there was a tunnel that goes through the hill, alas…
