The Whanganui River

by BDK

spent a few days floating down the whanganui river. it reminded me of the 40 Mile River in alaska and canada, except it had giant tree ferns and dead goats. goats are another of the pest species in NZ, as a consequence they are are shot on sight during the winter season.

it was an interesting bunch of people on the trip. several outfits rent canoes and drop people off at various points along the river. but as there are designated campsites you all tend to end-up in the same place at night. so, there were a couple from ireland, germany, a guy from france and a guy from switzerland and a guided group from england with the guides coming from calgary. other than the guides, and myself, none of the paddlers had any idea how to paddle a canoe, let alone run a river. during evenings around the picnic tables (high class campgrounds) i gave them some pointers on j-strokes and draw strokes. as a result, by the third day i was no longer the first one in camp.

pretty good deal on the canoe. $220 for the boat and the barrels, etc.
a feral goat. saw three dead ones as well.
the whanganui lies on the shoulder of one of the big volcanoes. this stuff is the remnants of a lahar. in places its visibly very very thick. being very soft the running water cuts interesting channels as shown here.
the boat i used. a nova-craft something. not a bad boat all in all. the rental guy had never seen anyone paddle solo before in a tandem canoe. had no idea what i was doing when i turned it around to paddle it "backwards" from the bow seat.
one of the campgrounds along the way.
high class privies.
the bunk house. includes propane burners for cooking dinners.
floating....
along the way.
another campsite.
the kids from ireland.
at one campsite there was a maori meeting house. fortunately they weren't meeting at the time. otherwise there is this ritual that you have to go through to enter the campground.
the 40 Mile River, oops, no, the Whanganui River!
the shuttle driver from "blazing paddles" canoe and the kids from ireland at the take out.
