We make a pit stop on the road today. Of course the toilets are accessed via the curio shop. There is a homemade sign outside the place that declares “Equator”. There is a guy there demonstrating how water in the N hemisphere drains clockwise and water in the S hemisphere drains counter clockwise and at the equator the matchstick that he uses to demonstrate this amazing effect doesn’t spin at all!
Two incredible facts come to mind after observing this feat. First they did a fantastic job of surveying to locate the homemade equator sign at exactly 0 degree latitude. And, second, for some reason the corealis effect within 30′ of the equator is exactly opposite of what happens in the rest of the world where storms spin counter clockwise in the north and clockwise in the south.
Nonetheless, I gave him 50 Kenyan Shillings (~60 cents) for the show.
