The photo below was taken sometime in 1945. The fellow seated to the right is my father.
A few years ago I came to the Philippines to track down a number of locales and photos from his WW2 days. I was mostly successful. But, the location shown herein eluded me.
Which was odd as I figured it would be the easiest to find given it’s somewhat substantial construction. Although I thought it a church it turns out that it’s a mausoleum. Which I discovered after I had returned to Alaska.
Last year I returned to the Philippines to complete my search but unfortunately the strongest typhoon in history beat me there. Neither Cebu, where I start from, nor Southern Leyte were damaged too bad in the storm. But the area I needed to traverse was.
The result was I had a nice stay in Cebu and OBJECTIVE: BURMA remained elusive.
This year I am once again on this side of the Pacific and have decided on one more attempt at OBJECTIVE: BURMA! Thus, I have arrived in Cebu.
OBJECTIVE: BURMA! is the town of Malitbog, Leyte. If you do a google earth search you can find it. If you look north of the town you can see the Malitbog cemetery and in the center of that is the mausoleum.
