Bull!

by BDK

Bulldog Ant, that is. Also known as Inch Ants. There are 93 species of this critter in OZ. They range in size from .5″ to 1.5″. These are one of the less giant species, about .75″. They have a nasty sting, a bit worse than a bee sting. They inject venom that some folks are allergic to and from which some have died.  They are an ancient ant. They have the second largest eyes of all ants and as a consequence, can see you and react to you. Unlike most ants they are solitary hunters.

I came across this nest where the males and(?) queens were crawling out of the hole, climbing nearby vegetation and flying off to start new colonies.

Don’t mess with Inch Ants!
