following the escape from monkey mia i headed south of perth to the rain forests of southwest AU. like most places the vast majority of the old growth has been cut down, but there is a smattering of it left.
...unfortunately there are also reminders of the times past. this is a fire lookout tree. rather than building lookout tower they installed lookouts on living trees. there are still 3 or 4 of these things. they claim that they still have a function, when its windy and the planes don't fly, but, it sounds like a bunch of crap to me. believe it or not, they let members of the public climb up these things.
nice, eh?
this is how these things grow, its not an artifact of someone messing with the tree when it was small.
