Cairo Traffic

by BDK

I’d say I’ve never seen driving like they drive in Egypt, but I have. Cambodia comes to mind. But in Cambodia all the total disregard for any semblance of codified rules occurs at speeds less than 25mph–at least in city traffic. But in Cairo, speed is as fast as one can go. I’ve given up counting the occasions of locked-up brakes and screeching tires. However, at least in Egypt people seem to obey the notion of directional traffic. (In Cambodia going with the flow is optional.)

Another neat feature is the “flexibility” with regard to lanes. The painted lanes are very much meant as general guidelines, to be ignored. If there is enough, with enough being defined as a couple to five inches, room for four lanes of traffic to fit into a designated three lane right away, tada!
