the plan was to spend a weekend with john and deb and the kids. but, as it turns out, deb and the kids are still in anchorage. which is bad for john and deb and the kids, but more gooder for me as i was able to camp at john’s place for about a week. after having been on the road for a month the chance to just more or less sit and do day trips worked out really well. the one major problem was that john is too good on the bbq, thus i ate way too much.
brookings is an interesting town. its the florida of oregon. lots and lots of grey haired folks wandering around. also wandering around is a skinny fellow in a pith helmet. he bee-bops down the street waving, most energetically, at folks as they drive by, and, doing the “double-index-finger-point”, and, if you are really lucky, snapping a sharp, crisp salute to you. brookings is also well supplied with those who smoke, and, sadly, there appears to be a shortage of functional automotive mufflers. all that said, its a nice town.
my day trips from brookings were to the various redwoods roads and trails. interestingly enough, the state redwoods parks are far better, at least for ready access, than the federal park. in fact, most of the federal park is comprised of 2nd and even 3rd growth forest. although there are some old growth stands in the federal park, the majority of seems to be located in the state park.
