Gridlock!

Concepts like directional traffic and traffic lanes are very fluid in their interpretation here. The only place you’ll see traffic lights are at major intersections. You can travel for many miles of city streets before encountering one. The vast majority of intersections have no signage at all. Cars, trucks, motos, pedestrians, bicycles all just kind of merge in every way imaginable. By and large this works, mostly because everyone knows the “rules” and because traffic speeds are usually quite slow. However, during rush hour things get a bit more chaotic. Here’s the intersection I walk by several times a day whilst heading to and from the school. I have a 6pm class, so I frequently am treated to the rush hour traffic show. My favorite part of this clip is the guy with red baton in front of the black car who is attempting to direct traffic. He’s an optimist.
