If you read the advice given by the State Department, or Canadian/UK Foreign Offices, you’ll find pretty dire safety warnings for Peru. For example, they, as well as locals, don’t recommend leaving the airport by foot at anytime, day or night.
In Lima, the “safe” neighborhood is Miraflores. I’m staying at a BnB located there. My bnb:

Last night, about 930pm, after I’d gotten back from dinner, I heard a yell and commotion outside my window. My window is in the center of the above photo.
This morning at breakfast, I met the source of the yell. Two guests were just arriving last night via a taxi. They got out and were about to enter the gate to the bnb when the woman was attacked and her purse snatched from her.
She lost some cash, her credit cards, a couple of phones, and, worst of all her passport. Luckily, her husband, who gave chase, didn’t catch the guy as he jumped on the back of an awaiting motorcycle. Or, she may have lost him as well.
And, I’m in the “safe” neighborhood. 🙃
Some of the homes/businesses, besides having fences designed to discourage climbers, also have electrified wires on top.
