The roads are nearly hopelessly clogged during the day. For tourists the best option are licensed taxis and private cars associated with hotels.
The masses rely on “bus” services. Lima is just beginning to build a government run transportation service — a real bus service and a metro. Otherwise it’s the private buses.
These private buses range in size from tiny vans to full size buses. What they have in common is low fares, suicidal drivers, questionable maintenance, and, usually, diesel stench.
