2017 Paddle of the Gulkana River

We spent 4 days going down the Gulkana River, one of my favorites. Alas, although we left early to beat the 4th of July crowds we still ran into a bunch of rafters. The trip starts on Paxson Lake. After about an hour and half with a steady headwind we reached and adequate campsite on the lake and the next day we entered the Gulkana. Saw a large family of Great Grey Owls, fuzzy photo below. We had pretty good weather for the entire trip, save the last evening when it started to rain at 5PM and continued until 11AM the next morning. But, we lived.

2017 Paddle of the Delta/Clearwater River

We spent a couple days on the Delta/Clearwater. The Clearwater River is one of very few streams in Interior Alaska that is spring fed, hence it’s name. After too many few miles it dumps into the Tanana River which is glacier fed and hence not clear at all.
