As part of my bridge series I visited Ironbridge. It’s the home of the world’s first bridge made of iron. Cast iron in this case. Built in 1779. The Brits became big fans of cast iron. They used it for many things. It was the plastic of the day. Became a little less enchanted when a railroad bridge made of the stuff collapsed and killed a bunch. The problem with cast iron is its brittleness. But for a foot and horse bridge it seems to be adequate.

Love the bridge photos. Reminds me a wee bit of some of the older Seattle bridges. The lattice work is eye catching, and the bridge seems in good repair. Maybe a good place to stop, sit, admire, and eat a potato and meat thingie with ginger beer.
